Tough Stuff!!!
Have you ever heard anyone say that raising a child on the autism spectrum was easy? I don't hear it alot. I do hear of roadblocks that parents face. We have faced them too. Here are some things we have dealt with parenting pur kids on the spectrum. Please feel free to comment in the blog, or email if you want more information on our experiences and how we overcame the "tough stuff".
Attention-Seeking Behaviors
Aversions (aversions to colors, textures, foods, you name it!)
Behavior Issues (at school, at home, in stores, anywhere you can imagine)
Biting
Being bullied
Chewing
Diet infractions
Discriminatory Comments (oh yeah, sure, it is because he has AUTISM right???)
Dumping things (from paper clips to rice, and yes, even powdered sugar...)
Extreme sensory issues
Gagging
Germ-a-phobia
Handwriting issues (print and cursive)
Immaturity
Lack of fear in dangerous situations
Lack of understanding from educators (not all educators are bad!!!! Don't assume that!!)
Less coordination that peers
Marriage Issues (the real statistic is that 80% of marriages who have an autistic child, fail. That is alarming, but understandable with all of the pressure in our lives.)
Obsessive Compulsive Tendencies
P.A.N.D.A.S. (Related to Strep)
Potty training issues (regression, refusal to go, severe constipation)
Being "Pre-Judged" as a "Problem Parent" before you even set foot into an ARD.
Reading Comprehension problems
Running away - darting
Screaming
Sleep Issues
Self-help skills (regression, non-mastery)
Self Stimulatory Behaviors (Stimming)
Work Problems (not enough time off, problems with co-workers, loss of job because of child's therapy and schedule)
There are many, MANY more things we could add to this list because having two boys on opposite ends of the spectrum, we have seen ALOT!!!! We love to help others get past their road blocks and get a night of sleep or a day without a potty training accident!! Email any questions you have! - Tiff
